Character Building Exercises for the Subway

Riding the subway is not only the fastest way to get around  NYC (usually) but it also has the added advantage of offering opportunities for self enrichment. To that end I recommend using your commute to practice patience and resistance over the temptation to be a hater (rare as these occasions may be on a NYC subway! ) On my frequent trips underground I can almost always find reasons to work on one or both of these character-building traits.

As an object lesson and with brutal honesty I will share one of my recently failed attempts. Riding the subway downtown early one morning two people seated across from me were engaged in a loud and animated conversation. Unable to avoid hearing every word I quickly realized they were discussing the “wonderful job our grossly underappreciated president is doing”.  Their voices rose as they competed with each  to share examples and expound on the virtues of the latest presidential edicts issued via tweet.  I tried to keep my thoughts focused on my character building mantra but when I glanced around I saw that many of my fellow passengers were sharing my struggle as evidenced by their subtle yet incredulous expressions.

Ironically, as I inwardly rolled my eyes and silently repeated “practice patience” & “don’t be a hater” I noticed the sign posted directly over their heads, “If You See Something, Say Something”. Any thoughts of practicing self-improvement were instantly erased as I wondered if these people and their totally misguided beliefs could be considered reportable!

Like I said, I recommend using your subway time to practice patience while trying not to be a hater. This can be character building in so many ways… or not!
